Fine November Weather

Another nice weekend is underway across the southeast.  A cold front that moved through earlier today is now well offshore and high pressure will continue to build in overnight and tomorrow.  This means we’ll see plenty of sunshine on Sunday with highs in the upper 60s.  Not much change to our weather over the next few days.  We’ll have dry, mild afternoons and clear, chilly nights as overnight lows dip down into the 40s.  Rain chances will be on the increase for the end of the week, while temperatures will remain seasonable with highs in the 70s.

Today is the final day for the Coastal Carolina Fair.  Hope everyone has gotten a chance to visit and enjoy the great food and entertainment.  It was a spectacular week of weather for the the fair this year.

Powerful hurricane Paloma continues to churn its way across central Cuba and will quickly weaken to a depression by this time Sunday.  Paloma peaked as a Category 4 hurricane earlier Saturday with winds up to 145 mph.  Hopefully this is the last named storm for the 2008 hurricane season.

Be back tomorrow with more.  Have a great Sunday !!

November Rain !!

Just a few days into November and we’ve got another soaker on the way.  After enjoying a fabulous weekend, our weather will be heading downhill overnight and especially on Monday.  An area of low pressure will continue to develop in the Gulf of Mexico and move towards the area.  Clouds will be on the increase tonight and rain will develop by morning.  Some of the rain on Monday may be heavy at times.  Right now it does not look like we’ll see rainfall totals like we saw a few weeks ago, but the morning and evening commute looks to be soggy.  Showers will most likely linger into Election Day as this area of low pressure slowly moves across the coastal waters.  Temperatures will be held down considerably for the beginning of the week as highs struggle in the mid 60s both Monday and Tuesday.  Improvement begins Wednesday and the second half of the week looks dry and mild with highs in the 70s.

We’ll continue to track the rainfall here in the StormCenter, but of course the big news will be on Election Day as we elect a new Commander in Chief.  Catch Chad, Ann, and Bill in the morning as they get you up and ready for the work week.  Don’t forget the umbrella !!  Have a great Monday !!

Last Week Of October !!

Published by Brad under Forecast Discussion, Forecasts

Hard to believe that November is right around the corner.  It was a nice Sunday across the area with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures.  The weather today gave us a chance to clean up after the flooding rains on Friday.  However, big changes are in store for us so lets talk about the forecast.

A strong cold front continues to push its way towards the southeast and will usher in the coolest weather so far this fall season.  We’ll see a fair amount of sunshine on Monday, but the afternoon will become windy as the cold front moves across the Lowcountry.  High pressure will then build into the area for the rest of the work week, but high temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will struggle to get out of the 50s.  Overnight lows for midweek will be cold as temperatures dip into the mid 30s across much of the region.  Frost is a good bet and possibly some freezing temperatures inland.  Milder weather returns by next weekend.

So make sure you have the long sleeves and jackets ready to go as we wrap up October.  Chad is back in the morning and I’ll see you the next few evenings.  I’ll be joining the Chief while Scott enjoys a little R & R.  Have a great Monday !!

What A Deluge !!

Finally some drier air moving into the area.  Heavy rain on Friday canceled high school football, flooded several parts of the Lowcountry, and pretty much made a mess of everything.  Over 6 inches of rain was recorded at the Charleston International Airport and over 5 and a half here at WCSC in West Ashley.  Rainfall totals like this were quite common across the region as an area of low pressure moved northeast out of the Gulf of Mexico and across South Carolina.  This low is now moving into the Mid Atlantic and will allow for high pressure to build in here for the remainder of the weekend.  We’ll see some sun later today, but Sunday looks really nice with clear skies and highs in the mid 70s.

Some very chilly air is now making its way into the northern Plains today and will sweep into the Southeast by midweek.  This will be the coolest air so far this fall.  Temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday will barely get into the 60s while overnight lows dip into the 30s.  Frost is likely away from the coast thus bringing the growing season to an end by Thursday.  The weather at least looks dry for the upcoming week, but once again temperatures will be well below normal starting Wednesday.

Hey the Coastal Carolina Fair starts on Thursday, October 30th.  Hope everyone will get a chance to visit the Live 5 house as we will be broadcasting live every night except on Election Day.  That’s it for now.  Don’t forget, Live 5 News in HD will be on tonight at 7 right after the Georgia and LSU matchup.  See you then and have a great weekend !!

Wet Finish To The Workweek

After a very nice stretch of weather, it looks like showers and storms will be around over the next few days. A slow moving upper level low will keep things unsettled unfortunately into the weekend. Right now it looks like Sunday will be drier than Saturday, but it doesn’t look like we’ll see weather like we saw last weekend.

Tropics still on the quiet side and we don’t see much on the horizon over the next few days. Remember, hurricane season continues through November.

Just a quick update tonight. Chad is back in the StormCenter in the morning and I’ll catch everyone this weekend. Hopefully, I’ll have better news on the forecast. Have a great Friday !!

Gloomy Week Ahead !!

Not much change to our weather this upcoming week.  We are in for a lot of clouds and showers as waves of low pressure pass just east of the Lowcountry.  In fact, by midweek, we could be looking at a fairly strong area of low pressure developing just offshore.  This Nor’easter type storm may provide the coastal areas with rain and gale force winds.  We’ll have to watch and see how the computer models handle this setup.

The tropics will have to continue to be monitored this week.  In fact the hurricane hunters investigated an area of disturbed weather in the eastern Caribbean today, but could not find a closed circulation, so it is still classified as an open wave.  Conditions may become more favorable for development on Monday and this system may be upgraded to a tropical depression.  Still too early to say where this system is headed, but we’ll continue to watch and have an update on Monday.

J. Chad is back in the saddle in the morning.  I’ll be here in the StormCenter working on WeatherBug upgrades as we continue to move towards our switch to HD next week.  9-29 watch for it !!  Have a great Monday !!

Gustav Headed For Louisiana, Watching Hanna

Published by Brad under Forecast Discussion, Tropics, Forecasts

Hurricane Gustav continues to make its way across the Gulf of Mexico tonight.  The storm is showing signs of strengthening as it draws closer to the Louisiana coast.  Landfall will most likely occur on Monday morning just west of New Orleans.  Gustav could become a Category 4 hurricane prior to landfall.  Either way, there will be widespread damage to the coastal areas due to the flooding rains and winds in excess of 100 mph.  Our prayers are with all the folks along the Gulf Coast tonight.

Tropical Storm Hanna remains fairly disorganized tonight.  The National Hurricane Center is forecasting Hanna to become better organized and possibly strengthen into a hurricane by Wednesday.  Hanna is expected to slowly move northwestward through the week and possibly threaten the Southeast coast of the U.S.  by the weekend.  Right now more questions than answers with Hanna, but bears watching throughout the week.

We’ll see a mix of clouds and sun for Labor Day with highs in the mid to upper 80s.  Can’t rule out a few showers either, but most of the day will be dry.  Have a great holiday !!

Fay Slowly Moving Away

The sun finally poked out for a few hours today, but it made it rather uncomfortable with the humidity. Tropical Storm Fay continues to slowly move west along the panhandle of Florida. It is forecast to continue to weaken and will most likely be a depression by Sunday. Heavy rain will continue across the deep south for the next few days, but it looks like our rain chances will slowly decrease by midweek. There will still be some deep tropical moisture in place around our area, so afternoon thunderstorms will remain in the forecast with highs in the mid to upper 80s.

We continue to watch the tropics very carefully as we may have our next depression in the Caribbean by early next week. The next name on the list by the way is Gustav.

Well that’s about it for today. We’ll chat some more on Sunday as we head into the last week of August (can you believe it).

Have a great Sunday !!

Quiet, But Still Hot

Not much change in the forecast for Monday.  We’ll see a day much like we saw on Sunday with highs in the low 90s.  Rain chances increase considerably on Tuesday and Wednesday, so pack the umbrella in the car tomorrow, that way you don’t forget on Tuesday.

The tropics are becoming a little more interesting.  We are watching a series of waves move west across the central Atlantic and all have the potential to become a tropical depression in the next few days.  We will continue to monitor the tropics each day and remember you can get an update at any time.  Just go the LIVE5NEWS.com and click on the Hurricane Center.  Also, don’t forget the Live 5 Hurricane Hotline - 402-5800.

What a great finish today to the PGA Championship.  Padraig Harrington came from behind to win his second major in a row.  That was the final major of 2008 and golf fans are already looking forward to next year’s Masters and hoping Tiger is back, I know I am.

That’s it for today.  Catch us tonight on the FOX 24 News at 10 and of course Live 5 News at 11.  J. Chad is back in the morning followed by Bill and Scott in the afternoon.  Have a great Monday and keep an eye on the tropics.

Nice Break From The Humidity

Ahh, finally a well deserved break from the humidity.  After the hottest week of the year we have much drier air that continues to push into the Lowcountry.  While it will remain on the hot side, at least it won’t be as uncomfortable.  Our pleasant summer weather will last through at least Monday before some changes into midweek.

Thankfully, the tropics remain quiet, but we all know that we are now heading into the most active part of the season.  Stay prepared and informed and we’ll keep our fingers crossed hoping that whatever develops out there for the rest of the season stays in the Atlantic.  That’s what we call a “fish storm” because it bothers no one but the fish in the ocean.

Thats it for now.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend folks and head for the beach.  Nothin’ could be fina’ than the weather in South Carolina !!
